The Initiative is open to energy companies with any level of direct involvement in exploration, extraction and/or production of oil, natural gas or other fossil fuels (excluding coal), irrespective of percentage revenue generated by these activities, irrespective of their geographical location or segment of the value chain they operate in.
That includes, but is not limited to, integrated oil and gas companies, integrated gas companies, exploration and production pure players, refining and marketing pure players, oil products distributors, gas distributors and retailers.
Joining the Initiative comes at no financial cost. Companies will manage implementation of the Initiative on their own, without any reporting to the Initiative. Signatories may choose to leave the Initiative for any reason at any time.

Signatories endorse the text of the Initiative and will strive to meet its aims.
- We will strive to reach near zero methane emissions from our operated oil and gas assets by 2030, and we will encourage our partners to achieve similar results.
- We will put in place all reasonable means to avoid methane venting and flaring, and to repair detected leaks, while preserving the safety of people and the integrity of operations.
- Signatories will report annually and transparently on their methane emissions.
- As technology evolves, we will supplement methane emissions estimates with more monitoring and measurement technologies, and introduce new solutions to avoid methane emissions. We welcome the continued improvement of measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) mechanisms.
- We support the implementation of sound regulations to tackle methane emissions and encourage governments to include methane emissions reduction targets as part of their climate strategies.
Signatories explicitly support the goals of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to well below 2°C and pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5°C, recognize there is a real urgency to act in accordance with best available science, and are ready to disclose greenhouse gas emissions or metrics.
Once you have submitted the form, the Secretariat will check that all criteria are met. We will liaise with you to coordinate the communication plan and outreach, and will then update the Aiming for Zero website with your company’s logo.
