Coalition for LNG emission abatement toward net zero

The Coalition for LNG Emission Abatement toward Net-zero (CLEAN) project, is a collaborative international initiative focused on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly methane, across the LNG value chain. It is supported by the United States, South Korea, Australia, the European Commission, and Japan, and co-hosted by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) and the International Energy Agency (IEA). The project involves sending questionnaires to LNG producers to collect data on their methane management and reduction practices. This information is consolidated by JOGMEC (Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security) and shared through a platform designed to improve transparency and showcase best practices. The CLEAN project also aligns with global methane initiatives like OGMP2.0 and incorporates insights from JOGMEC’s demonstration projects and guidelines for carbon intensity. The initiative’s goal is to foster a cleaner LNG supply chain, encouraging broader participation by LNG buyers and global collaboration on methane abatement. This effort represents a blend of public and private sector cooperation for achieving net-zero emissions within the LNG sector.
