  • OGCI’s methane library contains over 150 resources covering topics related to abating methane emissions
  • Resources include information on detection, tools, guidelines and best practices to reduce methane
  • The resources come from a variety of external sources, including international organizations, government agencies and think tanks.

LONDON, February 12, 2025: The Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) on Wednesday launched a publicly available methane library to help oil and gas companies access information on the technologies, tools, and strategies to reduce methane emissions and flaring.

The library contains over 150 mostly external resources, covering the full range of topics related to abating emissions of methane – a greenhouse gas more potent than carbon dioxide.

This includes information on methods of detection, tools to quantify and assess emissions, guidelines and best practices that have already proven successful in methane abatement, and regulatory frameworks.

The resources come from a variety of external sources, including international organizations such as the International Energy Agency (IEA), UNEP’s Oil & Gas Methane Partnership 2.0, the World Bank, and government agencies such as the US Environmental Protection Agency and Canada’s Environment and Natural Resources department.

Academic papers and think tank reports can also be found in the library as well as some OGCI publications.

Vanessa Ryan, head of OGCI’s Role of Gas workstream said:

“Consolidating and streamlining these important resources helps make them more accessible to oil and gas companies who are at different stages of tackling methane emissions at their operations. It provides a centralized platform to empower industry professionals with the knowledge and tools to take action to reduce methane emissions and keep methane in the pipe.”

OGCI and its member companies have already taken notable action to reduce the oil and gas industry’s methane emissions: setting targets, developing and deploying technologies and participating in multi-stakeholder initiatives to raise awareness and disseminate guidance and best practices.

Progress made by OGCI member companies and others has demonstrated that meaningful and cost-effective opportunities exist to drive rapid reductions in methane emissions in the oil and gas industry.

Since 2017, the group’s 12 member companies have reduced their aggregate upstream operated methane emissions and routine flaring by more than 50%.

About OGCI

  • The Oil and Gas Climate Initiative is a CEO-led initiative comprised of 12 of the world’s leading oil and gas companies, producing around 30% of global oil and gas.
  • OGCI aims to lead the oil and gas industry’s response to climate change and accelerate action towards a net zero emissions future consistent with the timeframe of the Paris Agreement.
  • Since 2017, OGCI’s member companies have collectively reduced upstream operated methane emissions and routine flaring by more than 50%, invested nearly $100 billion in low-carbon technologies and shared best practices across the industry and other sectors to accelerate emissions reductions.
  • In 2023, OGCI played a pivotal role in establishing the Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC), which was launched at COP28 in Dubai. OGDC is a coalition of 55 companies with activities across 104 countries working to decarbonize the oil and gas sector at scale.
  • OGCI’s members are Aramco, bp, Chevron, CNPC, Eni, Equinor, ExxonMobil, Occidental, Petrobras, Repsol, Shell and TotalEnergies.
