OGCI expands methane library with new features and content to accelerate emissions reductions

• OGCI launches phase two of its methane library, with over 70 new resources and enhanced functionality to support faster industry action
• The library is now structured around four key themes, guiding users from fundamentals to regulation
• The update supports OGCI’s broader ambition to reduce methane emissions across the oil and gas sector, including through the OGDC

LONDON, June 23, 2025 – The Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) has launched the second phase of its online methane library, with new features and significantly expanded content to help the oil and gas industry reduce methane emissions more effectively.

Now home to more than 200 resources, the library is structured to reflect the real-world decarbonization journey from fundamental knowledge through to regulatory frameworks.

New features include sections for most viewed and recently visited content, a related resources function that prioritizes geographically relevant material, and tools to email selected resources and sign up for updates. Content contributors are now clearly identified, with logos and links to original sources for full transparency.

The library brings together best practice and technical guidance from leading international institutions including the International Energy Agency, UNEP’s Oil & Gas Methane Partnership 2.0, the World Bank and regulatory bodies.

It includes material on detection technologies, measurement approaches, emissions abatement strategies and policy developments.

Since 2017, OGCI’s 12 member companies have reduced their aggregate upstream operated methane emissions by 55% and routine flaring by 53%. The methane library is part of OGCI’s wider efforts to share knowledge across the industry through initiatives such as the Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC), for which OGCI serves as secretariat.

The platform’s growth and enhancements are designed to support operators around the world in applying proven solutions, aligning with OGCI’s collective ambition to reach net zero operations in line with the Paris Agreement timeframe.

The Oil and Gas Climate Initiative is a CEO-led initiative comprised of 12 of the world’s leading oil and gas companies, producing around 30% of global oil and gas on an operated basis.

In 2016, OGCI launched Climate Investments to manage a $1 billion fund to develop and accelerate the commercial deployment of low emissions technologies. 

In 2023, OGCI played a pivotal role in establishing the Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC), which was launched at COP28 in Dubai. OGDC is a coalition of more than 50 companies with activities across 100+ countries working to decarbonize the oil and gas sector at scale. 

OGCI’s members are Aramco, bp, Chevron, CNPC, Eni, Equinor, ExxonMobil, Occidental, Petrobras, Repsol, Shell and TotalEnergies.
